A Class 6 student was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a shop in Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area, according to police. The Delhi Sadar Bazar Minor Assault Case came to light after a PCR call was received on the night of September 16. Police said a 56-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case and later sent to judicial custody.
According to the police account, the minor had reportedly gone out of her home late at night to purchase stationery items when she was allegedly lured into a nearby tailoring shop.
Police said the girl was allegedly restrained inside the shop and sexually assaulted. The police account states that she was also tied up during the incident.
A PCR call was received on the night of September 16, following which teams from Sadar Bazar Police Station and senior officers reached the location.
The matter was subsequently taken up by the Women Police Station of North District for further investigation.
Police identified the accused as 56-year-old Maqsood.
According to the police report, he was arrested after information about the alleged incident was received. He was subsequently sent to judicial custody.
An FIR was registered at the North District Women Police Station under relevant provisions relating to rape, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, commonly known as POCSO, and wrongful confinement.
The investigation is continuing and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
The Delhi Sadar Bazar Minor Assault Case will require investigators to establish what happened inside and around the shop and to examine the evidence available to them.
Investigators may consider the statement of the child, CCTV footage from nearby locations, statements of relevant witnesses and other evidence collected during the investigation.
In cases involving children, the investigation also needs to be handled with particular sensitivity. Protecting the child’s privacy is an important part of responsible reporting and legal procedure.
People should therefore avoid sharing the child’s name, photograph, school information, address or other details that could reveal her identity.
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act provides a specific legal framework for cases involving sexual offences against children.
Such cases require careful handling because the victim is a minor and may be particularly vulnerable during both the investigation and court proceedings.
Law-enforcement agencies have to collect evidence while ensuring that the child is treated with dignity and that unnecessary exposure or identification is avoided.
The arrest of an accused person is part of the criminal justice process and does not by itself establish guilt. The allegations will be tested through investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The Delhi Sadar Bazar Minor Assault Case also highlights the importance of responsible reporting when a crime involves a child.
Sensational descriptions, photographs or unverified social media claims can cause additional harm to the victim and family.
News coverage should therefore concentrate on verified information, police action and significant legal developments without revealing identifying details about the minor.
Social media users should also avoid forwarding any image, video or message that could identify the child.
The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of children in busy commercial areas.
Parents and guardians can discuss basic safety measures with children, including the importance of informing a trusted adult if an unfamiliar person attempts to take them somewhere privately or makes them uncomfortable.
Children should also know how to seek immediate help from trusted adults, nearby authorities or emergency services when they feel unsafe.
At the same time, child safety is a wider responsibility involving families, communities, businesses and law-enforcement agencies.
The police investigation will examine the evidence and circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while the legal process will determine how the allegations are dealt with. Further information may emerge as investigators complete their work and the case progresses through the courts.
For the public, the Delhi Sadar Bazar Minor Assault Case is a reminder that suspected crimes involving children should be reported to the authorities promptly. People who witness suspicious activity should avoid taking direct action themselves and should contact the police or appropriate emergency services.
The identity and privacy of the minor should remain protected throughout the investigation and legal proceedings.
