Mumbai, September 14, 2026: A senior citizen in Mumbai has allegedly lost ₹64 lakh in a cyber fraud that reportedly began with an insurance-related offer and later turned into a “digital arrest” scam. The case highlights how cyber criminals continue to use fake identities, fear and impersonation of government officials to target victims.
According to reports, the fraudsters first approached the victim by claiming to represent an insurance company. They allegedly told him that an old life insurance policy could be reactivated and that he could receive financial benefits connected with the policy.
According to the reported details, the victim was contacted by a person who introduced himself as an insurance company representative.
The person allegedly claimed that the senior citizen’s old life insurance policy, which had reportedly become inactive because premiums had not been paid for several years, could be reactivated.
The fraudsters allegedly convinced the victim to transfer money to different bank accounts as part of the supposed insurance-related process.
What initially appeared to be an insurance matter reportedly developed into a much larger cyber fraud.
After the initial interaction, another person allegedly contacted the victim and claimed to be associated with the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
According to the report, the caller allegedly accused the victim of having financial links with a criminal or terror-related organisation.
The fraudsters then reportedly used threats of legal action and “digital arrest” to frighten the victim. Under this pressure, the victim allegedly transferred additional amounts of money.
The victim reportedly lost a total of approximately ₹64 lakh during the fraudulent transactions.
The case demonstrates how cyber criminals may use multiple identities and convincing stories to gain a victim’s trust before creating fear and urgency.
By claiming to represent insurance companies or government agencies, fraudsters can make victims believe that they are facing serious legal or financial consequences.
A digital arrest scam is a type of cyber fraud in which criminals falsely claim to be police officers, investigators, government officials or representatives of law-enforcement agencies.
Victims may be told that their identity, bank account, mobile number or financial transactions are connected to a criminal investigation.
The fraudsters may then demand money, personal information or access to financial accounts while threatening arrest or legal action.
It is important to remember that genuine law-enforcement authorities do not conduct arrests through video calls or demand money from individuals to avoid arrest.
Cyber criminals often target senior citizens by exploiting trust and fear.
Fraudsters may use the names and logos of well-known organisations, government agencies, banks, insurance companies or law-enforcement bodies to appear legitimate.
Once a victim becomes frightened, the criminals may create a sense of urgency and instruct the victim to follow their demands immediately.
This makes independent verification extremely important whenever someone claims to be a government official or financial institution representative.
People should remain cautious if they receive unexpected calls regarding insurance policies, bank accounts, legal cases or government investigations.
Some important precautions include:
Do not transfer money simply because someone threatens arrest or legal action.
Never share OTPs, PINs, passwords or banking credentials with unknown callers.
Independently verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a government agency or financial institution.
Avoid clicking suspicious links or installing unknown applications.
Preserve phone numbers, messages, screenshots and transaction records if fraud is suspected.
Immediately contact the bank and appropriate cybercrime authorities after discovering a fraudulent transaction.
Cyber fraud cases can involve multiple transactions, identities, communications and digital records. Maintaining relevant information and records can be important when seeking professional assistance.
